Despite the name, RedGIFs doesn't host GIFs: every clip is an MP4 video. So "RedGIFs to MP4" isn't a conversion — it's saving the MP4 RedGIFs already has. The only real choice is which MP4.
We measured three clips through RedGIFs Downloader in October 2026:
| Clip | HD file | SD file | SD resolution |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 s, with sound | 21.6 MB | 4.1 MB | 942×480 |
| 37 s, with sound | 36.3 MB | 7.4 MB | 480×856 |
| 11 s, silent | 5.4 MB | 1.0 MB | 480×854 |
SD came out at roughly one fifth of the HD size every time. HD is the full upload — the 60-second example is 2120×1080 H.264 video with an AAC audio track.
Both keep the sound when the clip has it. The result card tells you "with sound" or "no sound" before you download; silent clips are silent in every version (why some clips have no sound).
Downloads are named after the uploader and the clip — uploader-clipname.mp4, with -sd added for the small version and .jpg for the thumbnail — so a folder of saved clips stays sorted by creator.
These are standard H.264 MP4s: they play in Photos, Google Photos, Windows Media Player, QuickTime and VLC without extra codecs. If you prefer a download manager, Copy direct link gives you the media URL to paste into it.
Open RedGIFs Downloader →No. RedGIFs stores every clip as MP4 already. A downloader just saves that file; converting would only lose quality.
HD is the full-resolution upload (often 1080p, H.264 with AAC audio). SD is RedGIFs' mobile copy, around 480p and roughly one fifth of the size.
You can with any video-to-GIF tool, but a GIF has no sound and is usually larger than the MP4. Keep the MP4 unless you specifically need a GIF.
